STUYVAERT VICTOR
Victor Stuyvaert was a Belgian artist, born and died in Ghent (1897-1974).
He was a woodcarver, illustrator and watercolorist. After his education at the Academy in Ghent, under the guidance of J. Delvin, G. Minne and C. De Cock, he specialized in wood carving and book illustration.
He engraved and drew (Indian ink, with or without watercolour) countless series of plates in a decorum of miniatures, hunting scenes and horse rides through snow-covered forests, mountain paths and roads through ice fields. He was inspired by medieval legends, Eastern and Slavic art, ancient, but also modern literature. He was the author of more than fifteen hundred wood engravings, designed one hundred and seventy bookplates and illustrated sixty-one volumes.He also designed drawings for lace, carpets and jewelry.He also provided illustrations for more than 100 literary works, including La Reine Morte, Paradise Lost and Don Quichotte.
Stuyvaert studied at the Academy of Ghent until 1922.In 1924 he became a drawing teacher at the Ghent Athenaeum and in 1931 at the Lyceum.
From 1940 to 1957 he was a teacher at the Academy of Ghent. The students in his own graphic studio included Gerard Gaudaen. Stuyvaert was a member of La Gravure Originale Belge. His work can be found in all kinds of museums and print cabinets and especially in the Ghent Museum Arnold Vander Haeghen, where a cabinet is named after him.
He also designed the shield of the Flemish Economic Circle (VEK) in Ghent. His work was awarded the Prize for Small Graphics West Flanders in 1919 and an Honorary Prize in 1935 during the World Exhibition in Brussels.He is mentioned in CRICK, BAS I and Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists.
