Authentic anitique Italian Carriage/ Cart Axle, Sicily by Francesco Petrarca, circa 1830

Original decorative end part of a cart axle located underneath the cart box of a 19th Century Sicilian horse-, ox- or donkey-drawn carriage in carved wood and iron

The extremely elaborate and ornate hand forged, chiseled iron part shows knights with helmets, swords and shields and is decorated with arabesques featuring anthropomorphic and phytomorphic elements which refers back to artifacts from the eastern part of the Island. The wooden part is made ash wood, without any painted decoration depicting a Roman chariot, a castle and the carved name, Petrarca.Francesco. Crammichele. 'Francesco Petrarca ', is that of the craftsman representing the maker of this axle to a carrettu Siciliano

Grammichele is a town located in the province of Catania, in the eastern part of Sicily. The town has an ancient history dating back to the Greek and Roman eras

You can present this unique conversation piece on a console or as a center table or you can transform it into a ceiling light. This piece has been used in the past with wax candles in the 4 holes on top.
