Antique 'Prie-Dieu' devotional kneeling and storage cabinet 'nun's cabinet' from a convent or private chapel

Preloader

A prie-dieu (literally from the French: "pray to God") is a special piece of furniture designed for kneeling during prayer, usually a kneeling stool or small cabinet like this one from the 19thC.
Similar, simple wooden models in this austere, rustic style are often of French, Italian, Belgian, or Dutch origin.

In convents, this was one of the few personal pieces of furniture a nun was allowed to have in her cell (bedroom). Due to the vow of poverty, nuns personally owned virtually nothing, and the interior was minimalist.

The storage space under the top flap, the small door with a shelf behind it, and the flap with deep storage space at the bottom were used to store items such as their rosary, Bible, or spiritual books.
This painted wooden cabinet is in good condition with normal signs of use, complete with lock and key.

This piece can be a beautiful Prie-Dieu – Kneeling stool in a private Chapel or to place in a small entrance or hallway to store all your gloves and scarves. Easy to use as a footrest to put on/take off your shoes or boots or used as a bedside table/cupboard or a little bookcase .

Dimensions: 89.5cm H, 64cm W, 42cm D (top section 22.5 cm D)
