Unique iron and caned folding Campaign-style reclining armchair or deck chair with adjustable positions, from upright to horizontal. Raised on casters.

Manufactured by the Marks Adjustable Chair Co., New York, USA 1885- 1890 ca.

Cavedra b. Sheldon, a New York City architect and inventor, designed this chair and sold the design to the marks adjustable folding chair company of New York City. The concept  and design for this fantastic chair was derived from late 18th century portable iron campaign furniture used by military officers in the field, in their tents, the so-called 'campaign furniture'.

In addition to being used in homes as a parlor chair, lounge armchair, library chair,relax chair, chaise -longue and daybed it was also used in Sanitariums and as a deck chair in resorts and on cruise ships.

This amazing adjustable antique chair from the Napoleon III/Victorian era can assume more than fifty individual positions!! Easily adjusts from chair to bed. Is in fabulous antique condition and ready to use, all the mechanisms are working well

You can still see the beautiful gold decorative paint details on the black cast iron frame, very decorative
This antique armchair is in a very good and working condition, the original cane is intact, only the feetrest has some minor damage, see pictures
The cushions ar not original but upholstered with nice vintage fabric the old advertising pictures shows the original type of cushions.

This incredible and comfortable reclining chair is a great example of functional art

This specific design won a gold medal at the 1901 World's Fair, the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, New York. This was truly a revolutionary design and outstanding not only for comfort but also for health.
The chair is also held in the permanent collections of both the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and the Brooklyn museum.

Height 107 cm, total length fully extended is 195 cm. Seat height is 40 cm and 46 cm including the cushion. Cushion is 60 cm wide. 74 cm total wide, the cushion is 60 cm wide.
