Antique ca 1800 hand carved wooden ornament with gilding and gesso ( bois doré)
Modelled as poppy seed pod
A wooden dowel at the bottom for attachment, possibly a crowning, finial or furniture ornament

Condition: as found, authentic patina, with some loose and chips in the gilding and gesso and a few old wormholes

Ornaments inspired by nature, such as this poppy seed pod or pine cones, were enormously popular during the Directoire, Empire, and Louis XVI periods in France (late 18th century to early 19th century)
